his small city garden was done as a sort of tribute to the work
of California’s pioneer modernist landscape architect, Thomas
Church.
Sadly, few homeowners know of his influence in creating the “California
style” as we know it, or of his international reputation as one
of the great landscape architects of this century. The majority
of his gardens have been removed or renovated beyond recognition.
A NOTE TO HOMEOWNERS
If you think that you have the bones of an old Thomas
Church garden, you would do well to consider restoring it, or
at least reconfiguring it in a manner sympathetic to the original.
Most Church gardens have significant historic value, and most
have been replaced with far inferior designs.
