This is the only photograph on file from the “estate years” in Woodside and Portola Valley.
Known as the “country gardener," Chris developed several estate gardens during the early 1970’s, doing design, installation and maintenance.
According to English garden tradition, this approach would be called “landscape gardening.” It’s a wonderful way to develop a garden, but the tradition is all but dead, having been replaced by mow, blow and go.
During this period, Chris was a volunteer gardener and docent at Filoli, prior to its acceptance into the family of National Trust properties. Here some of the finest, most dedicated amateur gardeners of our generation rallied to preserve this monumental Edwardian era garden.
